Music Without Borders shines a spotlight on the creative contributions of Arab women through Hanim | هانم, a special concert celebrating iconic Arab women in music like Umm Kulthum, Asmahan, Fairouz, Sabah, Shadia, Warda, Mayada El Hennawy, and others.

The Arab world has a rich musical heritage that is in no small part due to its women singers. This concert features the exceptional voice of Ranya Jamal and is under the esteemed direction of Syrian-Canadian musician Gaby Al Botros.

Led by a Canadian and U.S. National fiddle champion, Shane Cook & The Woodchippers rely on their deep foundation in the traditional music, song and dance of Ontario.

Joining Shane are Emily Jean Flack (Leahy) on vocals, piano and dance and five-time national step dance champion, Kyle Waymouth (Ashley MacIsaac) on guitar, tenor banjo and dance. Says multiple Grammy nominee, Claire Lynch, "Shane offers up death-defying, acrobatic fiddle precision, soaring through tunes from his beloved Ontario with impeccable clarity."

What is a Sarswela?

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Sarswela emerged as a form of theatre that Barangays across the Philippines used to communicate political happenings of the Philppine-American War to the masses through the arts. Originally a Spanish form, KW Sentro authors these original Filipino musicals to dialogue with our audiences about critical issues in the Filipino diaspora.

Join The Elora Singers as we explore historical choral masterpieces created for the spaces in which they were first heard. 

We begin with sounds meant to reverberate in the Sistine Chapel, Paris’ Notre Dame, Venice’s St Mark’s Basilica, and other sacred places. 

In the second half, we discover Alex Berko’s Sacred Place.  This new work is an ecological service that connects the old with the new, the sacred with the secular, and the individual with their community. The outline of the work is a Jewish service. However, rather than Jewish prayers, the text is made up of various writers and thinkers who speak of the environment as a place of safety, comfort, and beauty.

Gerdan is an amazing sixteen member folk singing group from Chernivtsi, Ukraine and their arrangements of traditional folk songs are reinvigorating authentic Ukrainian music and astounding audiences everywhere!

There is a primal vibration in the ancient songs from villages across Ukraine. As they wash over you... you can feel the connection with your ancestors and others from times gone by.

On this Canadian tour, Gerdan will thrill and astound you with their energy and soulfulness as well as their passion for a culture that has for too long been under threat.

In addition, this tour is happening to support families in Ukraine affected by the war that will need support and rehabilitation in the months and years to come.

You will feel uplifted and enchanted by the power and connection that is generated between the singers and the audience and show your support for Ukraine!
